2022 Youth & Family Summit

  • Date: June 14-June 16, 2022
  • Location: James Madison University - Festival Conference & Student Center

About:

The Youth and Parent Summit is a three-day event held each June and sponsored by the Virginia Department of Education and the Partnership for People with Disabilities. Youth with disabilities from across the Commonwealth meet to network and discuss issues of importance to youth and young adults with disabilities.

Below are some key logistics for this exciting opportunity:

πŸ—“ Date: June 14-16, 2022 (Tuesday evening – Thursday afternoon)
πŸ“ Location: Festival Conference & Student Center @ James Madison University
πŸ™ŒπŸ½ Event type: Face-to-face event [with a virtual component offered to youth who would rather not attend in person, are not accepted, or don’t meet the requirements]
πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Attendees: We will accept up to 50 youth residing in Virginia
🎯 Ages: 14-16-year-olds (Youth outside of this age range are encouraged to participate in the virtual component. No application is necessary for the virtual component.)
πŸ’‰ COVID protocol: We will follow JMU event policies and will communicate those policies as we get closer to the event

The application below is for the in-person event only.Β Youth who are 14-16 years old (during the summit dates) and want to attend in-person should apply. If you do not fall within that age range OR if you would rather access the virtual component you DO NOTΒ need to fill out an application. Access to the virtual component has been added below under the Virtual Component section.Β

Event Focus:

This year youth and families will learn about 3 key components of self-determination: Competence, Autonomy, and Relatedness. Youth will attend sessions that help them understand these three components, how to put them into practice, and how to plan for continued growth in each area.
Parents will attend separate sessions built specifically for them, focusing on the same components and also bringing in awareness of resources and agencies available to families in Virginia.
As details are finalized, new information will be added to this page. We appreciate your patience as we continue to build this event.

Application

***Applications are no longer being accepted for this event.*** Apply for the in-person event – ages 14-16. Parents do not apply separately. The youth application includes parent information. We have extended the due dates for applications an extra week. Now due March 20, 2022. No application necessary for the virtual component. More info about the virtual component will be posted closer to the event.

Virtual Component:

We know not everyone can attend our in-person Youth & Family Summit, so our team has put together a virtual component that is based on the concepts and activities that we will be doing during the event.
The virtual component will not open up until Tuesday, June 14th, however, you can now ENROLL FOR FREE so that you are ready to go.

The virtual component is made for:
πŸš€ Youth & Families who can not be at the in-person event
πŸš€ Youth & Families outside of VA
πŸš€ Teachers who want to learn more about how to increase students’ senses of competence, autonomy, and relatedness (oh, and there’s a bonus virtual assistive technology lab)
πŸš€ Teachers who are curious about what happens at a Summit
πŸš€ Teachers who want a ready-made option that you can facilitate with your classes (encourage your students to enroll!)
