Applying for the Youth & Family Summit
Each year, we accept 50 youth to participate in the Summit. Even if you’ve attended a previous Summit, you can re-apply each year. The application will ask you for information about yourself and the parent or guardian who will attend with you. You will also answer questions about why you want to attend the event and how you’re already practicing self-determination skills.
How to Apply
Accommodations or Assistance
We encourage youth with all abilities to apply. We understand that some individuals will need assistance or accommodations when filling out the application. For the essay portion, we want the answers to be representative of who the youth are. If you have questions or need assistance filling out the application, please email event@imdetermined.org.
Step 1: Gather Your Information
Before you begin your application, make sure you have the information you’ll need, including your contact information (address, phone number, email address, school) as well as information about your parent/guardian and emergency contact.
Please note: All communication, including acceptance letters, are sent through email. Please make sure that you use an email address that works and is easy for you to access. **PRO TIP – School email addresses often get blocked, so if you have a personal email address that you check regularly, use that one!
Step 2: Prepare Your Answers to the Application Questions
Answering the application questions is a way for us to get to know you. We accept typed answers, voice recordings, videos, and presentations. We recommend preparing your answers to the application questions in advance. You can find more detailed information about the questions and how to answer them on the first page of the application form.
Step 3: Fill Out the Application Form
Once you have what you need, fill out all of the required information on the application form. You can save your application as a draft and come back to it later if you want.
Step 4: Submit Your Application
Once you click submit, you will automatically receive a copy of your application to the email address that you gave on your application. Give the system 10 minutes or so to send the confirmation email. If you don’t receive this confirmation email, check your spam folder, and if you still don’t see it, please contact us at event@imdetermined.org.
The Application Process and Timing
- Fill out the application by the deadline. We encourage you to apply as soon as you can to allow time to fix any issues that may occur. The application system will automatically turn off at the end of the application window. No late applications will be accepted.
- The review team looks at all of the applications that are received by the deadline. All applications are processed equally by our team, who review them for authenticity, completeness of each component, and for the application to represent the youth’s voice.
- If you’re selected, we will reach out and ask you to fill out a survey with information about your specific accommodations, dietary restrictions, and other needs.
- Between February and April, every family attending the Summit will receive a phone call from an I’m Determined representative to prepare you for the event and answer any questions you may have.
- In the spring, you’ll receive additional information about the event, including a packing list, detailed schedule, and more.
If you run into any trouble with your application or have additional questions about the process, email event@imdetermined.org for assistance.
