Empowering Families: Karen Catacora
Mother of Youth Leader, Gina Catacora

“Karen (left) and Gina (right) at their first Youth Summit. It was a transformative experience for both of us. We learned the value of competence, autonomy, and relatedness and how they connect to the Elements of Self-Determination. We also made connections and learned how increased opportunities for practice help both of us grow.” – Karen Catacora
Question / Answers from Karen:
1. What do you want educators to know about having students as active participants in their IEP meetings?
Students as active participants in their IEP meetings can have the same meaningful effect as a patient being an active participant in their health journey. Student voice provides a powerful means not only for self-advocacy but also for helping students understand they have choices and control of their lives.
2. Why would you recommend the Summit to Youth and Families?
The Summit provides an opportunity for Youth and Families to connect and discover they are not alone in their journey. The experience of the Summit provides a place to grow self determination and share perspectives with others. Being part of Youth and Families building relatedness and fostering their competence at the Summit is amazing!
