January’s Topic – Winchester: A Culture of Self-Determination
This session highlights Winchester Public Schools’ division-wide initiative to embed the I’m Determined principles into everyday instructional culture for all students. What began three years ago as a simple spark—recognizing that self-determination is essential for every learner—has grown into an intentional and strategic effort. The work first took root in special education settings before expanding across the entire division and becoming formally integrated into the district’s strategic plan. At its core, the initiative aims to hand students the “keys to the Self-Determination CAR,” empowering them to take ownership of their learning and future.
Participants will explore how WPS uses a structured, step-by-step approach supported by professional development and family engagement to build a sustainable culture of self-determination. The session will also provide space for attendees to reflect, exchange ideas, and share successful practices from their own districts.
