Gainesboro Elementary School has adopted inclusion of the I'm Determined project for its students in grades K-5 since 2013. Gainesboro’s recognition award ceremony in 2014 offered all 5th graders an opportunity to share what their I'm Determined goal was upon leaving elementary school and transitioning into middle school.
Within this school, a parent leader implemented ways to share I'm Determined with the parents of students attending Frederick County Public Schools. Through the Frederick County Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC), an end-of-school year I'm Determined Parent and Youth Mini Summit was held.
3 Cool Things
All students K-5 (special and general education ) are encouraged to be involved in implementing the core components of self-determination through developmental guidance and I'm Determined school-wide activities.
Throughout the school, the I'm Determined philosophy is evident. Amazing bulletin board displays, as well as Ernestine the Determined Eagle, the school mascot wearing her own I'm Determined T-Shirt, can be seen in the cafeteria and in various locations throughout the school building.
“Be Determined to make this a good day.”
Messages of determination are included on the school’s televised morning announcements. Students are often recognized for behaviors and words of determination. Sign-off announcement is “Be determined to make this a good day.”
